Papers, 1811-1998 1850-1921.

The papers of George Frederick Wright document his work as a minister, theology professor, geologist, and literary writer. These materials include correspondence, writings, sermons, addresses, field notes, research notes, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The papers document Wright's early thinking about evolution beginning in the late 1860s, as well as his changing views on science and theology as he turned toward fundamentalist ideas at the end of the nineteenth century. Documented, too, is his work investigating geological formations in the United States, Greenland, and. Asia. Of some significance is the documentation of his work bringing science and theology together by reconciling scientific theories, notably evolution, with biblical accounts. The papers also include material on Wright's work as a minister and on the theology and geology courses he taught at Oberlin College and Theological Seminary. Additional material includes genealogical material and Wright Family correspondence, 1811-1915. The collection includes very little material related to Wright's Standard History of Lorain County or to his editorial work for Bibliotheca Sacra and Records. Of the Past.
